The Albuquerque New Mexico International Balloon Fiesta has been on my bucket list for probably 20 years and by a bit of dumb luck I ended up checking this one off the list during the AIBF’s 50th anniversary in 2022. The event takes place over nine days in October, featuring various exciting activities such as mass ascensions and specialty glow events. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t a cheap trip, but I’ve made some suggestions below where you can save if you’re planning your own Balloon Fiesta adventure!

Airfare from Orlando: $594.20

I flew United on the way there and American on the way home. Both flights connected in Texas and were uneventful. Obviously, airfare will vary depending on where you’re coming from, but I’d suggest booking as far in advance as possible. Prices will fluctuate throughout the year leading up to the Balloon Fiesta, but you’re locked into a specific set of dates, so grab tickets when you see a good rate!

Rental Car: $651.55

I booked the cheapest car with Thrifty and was upgraded to a small SUV upon pickup. 2022 rental car prices are freaking crazy, y’all! I booked early and kept an eye on rates leading up to the fiesta and they kept going up, up, and away!

Hotel: $1349.65

I ended up with a King Suite at the Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown because that’s all that was available when I booked. Booking early (are you sensing a theme here?) is your best money-saving option. That and sharing with friends to cut costs.

Accommodations for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

  • Hotels: Booking early is crucial to secure a spot.
  • Camping: If you love the outdoors, consider staying at one of the RV parks or campgrounds nearby. They offer amenities like hookups, showers, and laundry facilities.
  • Vacation rentals: Services like Airbnb or VRBO can be a more affordable and comfortable option, especially for larger groups or families.
  • Planning your arrival and accommodations in advance will ensure you have a stress-free experience at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloon Flight (including Ryders Club): $ 740

This was definitely a splurge and so, so worth it! The optional Ryders Club includes: express check-in, VIP heated lounge pre-flight with catered breakfast, pilot Q&A, VIP escort to your balloon, and a Ryders Club souvenir gift package (a mug, a pin, a warm hat, a sticker, a tote bag, and some other things that I’m forgetting). I would do the hot balloon ride again in a heartbeat, but if I was on a budget I’d skip the Ryders Club package. Also note that Rainbow Ryders is the only balloon company permitted to launch from the field during the Albuquerque New Mexico International Balloon Fiesta.

Admission Fees: $178.72

Three park & ride tickets (which include admission) and one general admission ticket to the Balloon Fiesta, all purchased in advance. Admission (w/ virtual reality upgrade) to the Frida Kahlo exhibit, admission to the Balloon Museum, and admission to the BioPark Zoo. I had spent another $30 on a Sandia Tram ticket, but the visibility was 0%, so they refunded that when I opted out of the ride.

Hot Air Balloon Activities and Events

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is packed with activities and events that will leave you in awe. Here are some highlights you won’t want to miss:

  • Mass ascensions: Witness hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies in a breathtaking display of color and sound. These mass ascensions occur at dawn and dusk, weather permitting.
  • Dawn patrol: Experience the magic of the dawn patrol, where a select group of balloons take off before sunrise to test the winds and prepare for the mass ascension.
  • Special shape rodeo: Marvel at the unique and whimsical special shape balloons during the special shape rodeo. These creative designs add an extra layer of fun to the event.
  • Balloon glows: As night falls, watch the balloons light up the sky in a mesmerizing balloon glow. It’s a magical and romantic sight you won’t forget.

Remember to check the official Balloon Fiesta website for the most up-to-date information on activities and events. With so much to see and do, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta promises an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Parking: $53

Parking twice at the Balloon Fiesta, a parking lot in Old Town, and a few metered parking spots around down.

Getting To Balloon Fiesta Park

  • By car: There’s on-site parking, but be prepared for crowds and long lines. Carpooling or using public transportation can help reduce congestion.
  • By public transportation: Albuquerque offers a convenient Park & Ride service that takes you directly to Balloon Fiesta Park. The ABQ Ride bus system is another great option.

Gas: around $40

I did a decent amount of driving but only had to fill up once before I returned the car.

Food: around $300

I ate what I wanted, when I wanted, including a lot of fair food at the Fiesta and I enjoyed every bit of it! If you’re looking to save money here, pack snacks and bottled water, but don’t be surprised if you’re tempted by the funnel cake!

Food and Drink at The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

  • The park is filled with a variety of food vendors, offering everything from traditional fair food like cotton candy and funnel cakes to more substantial meals like burgers and tacos.
  • Be prepared for long lines and higher prices. To save money, consider bringing your own snacks and drinks.
  • Staying hydrated is crucial. Bring your own water bottle and take advantage of the refill stations available throughout the park.
  • Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are available for purchase and are very welcome in the cooler morning hours. Soda and beer are also available for purchase.
  • By planning ahead and bringing some of your own refreshments, you can enjoy the Balloon Fiesta without breaking the bank.

Airport Parking at Home: $53.76

Because of my crazy flight times, I drove myself to and from the airport in Orlando. I frequently use an off-site parking place that shuttles you to the actual airport. It’s cheaper than on-airport parking though a bit less convenient. I’m able to reserve my spot online and by doing so save 10% and I accumulate points that I can use for free days of parking.

Shopping: around $250

I bought some local art, a few pins, and some other odds and ends for myself as well as a gift for my pet sitter. This is definitely a place you could cut costs if you’re looking to save.

The perfect packing list for the Albuquerque
International Balloon Fiesta

Packing for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta can make or break your experience. With the right gear, you’ll be ready to enjoy every moment of this spectacular event. Here’s a handy packing list to ensure you’re well-prepared:

Misc: $139

My running shoes got absolutely soaked and they were the only pair of shoes I packed (other than a pair of flip-flops) so I ended up stopping by the local running store and picking up a new pair. Definitely an unexpected cost, but I’ll wear these far beyond the trip, so not a big deal. The moral of the story is to pack a second pair of shoes.

Grand Total: $4349.88 ($870/Day)

Could you do this trip cheaper? Absolutely! A huge chunk of my expense was for the hot air balloon flight, which was definitely an indulgence, but I have zero regrets! I always thought this would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me, so I spent like it but now I’m seriously contemplating going back!

Don’t forget to download the official mobile app for the Balloon Fiesta event. It allows you to select and keep track of your favorite balloons and pilots, offering real-time updates and navigation assistance to enhance your experience.

If you like it put a pin on it!
