Overwater bungalows in French Polynesia are typically what you picture when you envision your dream overwater bungalow vacation.

French Polynesia is a large French overseas territory that is comprised of five island groups: The Society Islands, The Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands, and the Austral Islands

Overwater Bungalows in the Society Islands Archipelago

Windward Islands

Overwater Bungalows in the Austral Archipelago

The Austral Islands in French Polynesia is an archipelago made up of seven islands, five of which are inhabited. The five inhabited islands are Rūrutu (Rurutu), Ra’ivāvae (Raivavae), Tupua’i (or Tubuai), Rimatara, and Rapa (Rapa Iti, not to be confused with Easter Island, which is Rapa Nui). Îles Maria and Marotiri are the two uninhabited islands.

There are currently no overwater bungalows anywhere in the Austral Islands.

Overwater Bungalows in the Marquesas Archipelago

One of the most remote island groups in the world and among the largest in French Polynesia, the Marquesas Islands (Îles Marquises or Archipel des Marquises or Marquises) is comprised of 15 islands in two island groups.

The northern island group, Te Henua ʻEnana (North Marquesan), consists of Eiao, Hatutu (Hatutaa), Motu One, Nuku Hiva, Motu Iti (Hatu Iti), Ua Pou, Motu Oa, and Ua Huka.

The southern island group, Te Fenua ʻEnata (South Marquesan), consists of Fatu Uku, Tahuata, Moho Tani (Motane), Terihi, Fatu Hiva, and Motu Nao (Thomasset Rock), and Hiva ʻOa.

There are no overwater bungalows located in the Marquesas islands.

Overwater Bungalows in the Gambier Archipelago

Located almost 1,000 miles southeast of Tahiti, the remote Gambier Islands (or Îles Gambier or Archipel des Gambier) is an archipelago in French Polynesia. The archipelago is made up of the Mangareva Islands and the uninhabited Temoe atoll.

Mangareva, Akamaru, Aukena, and Taravai are the major islands, with Mangareva being the largest of the 14 islands.

There are currently no overwater bungalows anywhere in the Gambier Islands.
