From climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to seeing the Great Migration as a million wildebeest cross the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing areas, Tanzania is a popular country to visit. As with any international travel, it’s important to determine in advance of your trip if you need a visa for Tanzania.
US Citizens require a visa to visit Tanzania. Other countries may also require a visa to visit. A complete list of countries that require a visa can be found here.
There are multiple types of Tanzania visas. An ordinary visa allows for a single entry to Tanzania for holiday or family visits and you can stay for up to three months.

A multiple visa allows for multiple entries into Tanzania and is for spouses of Tanzanian residents, employees of Tanzanian companies, and government consultants. US citizens who are not eligible for an ordinary visa can also apply for a multiple-entry visa. The. multiple entry visa allows you to enter Tanzania multiple times for up to 90 days in a one-year period.
The transit visa allows entry into Tanzania for up to seven days while en route to a country outside Tanzania.
To travel to Tanzania you must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after your date of arrival in Tanzania and has one full blank page. You will also need a recent passport-size photo of yourself.
To apply for any type of Tanzania visa, you will need a valid email address and a credit card to pay the fee when you complete the online visa application.
For an ordinary visa, you will also need either a round-trip flight proving your departure from Tanzania.
If you are applying for a multiple entry visa, you also need a certificate of marriage and ID showing you are married to a Tanzanian resident or an introduction letter from a host institution (such as a Tanzanian employer) that details the reason for and frequency of visits to Tanzania.
Transit visa applications require proof of an onward flight departing from Tanzania and a visa for that destination.
To apply for a visa (including both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar) you must complete an online visa application for an e-visa. Your online application will be reviewed and you will be notified via email if your application has been accepted or denied.
It takes about six business days for online visa applications to be processed and you will be notified via the email you provided if your visa application has been accepted or denied.
The application fee for a visa is $100. An additional $1.50 online processing fee is charged, bringing the total fee to $101.50.
Tanzania has three international airports: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). Kilimanjaro International Airport is the most popular point of entry, but if you are heading directly to Zanzibar, choose Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). Emirates, Turkis Airlines, Qatar Airways, and KLM all fly to Tanzania.
