Just a two-and-a-half hour flight from Miami, Roatan is home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Topped in size only by the Great Barrier Reef, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef stretches 625 miles along the coast of Honduras, Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala, and is home to more than 500 species of fish and 60 species of coral. This makes Roatan one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the Western hemisphere. And when it comes to overwater bungalows in Roatan, there are four great options! Let’s explore all that Anthony’s Key Resort, Turquoise Bay Dive & Beach Resort, Mango Creek Lodge, and CoCo View Resort have to offer!
If you’ve got little ones and you’re looking for an overwater bungalow vacation, Anthony’s Key Resort is the close-to-home resort for you! The resort has a Dolphin Scuba Summer Camp for kids. This is a weeklong program during your vacation where kids age 6-12 learn about dolphins through encounters, feeding, and training sessions along with snorkeling and diving activities and island field trips. And if you’re experiencing dolphin envy, adults can take part in 30 or 60-minute dolphin encounters or take Dolphin Trainer-for-a-Day or Dolphin Specialty Courses.
If hitting the spa and lounging on the deck of your overwater bungalow are more your speed, Anthony’s Key is also ideal for that! The air conditioned Key Superior Bungalows are wrapped in windows and have spacious overwater decks for lounging.
All-inclusive thematic packages (think dive packages, resort packages, and honeymoon packages) mean you can have a convenient worry-free getaway. You’ll enjoy three daily meals and Ankor Seafood Grill. The resort also holds a weekly Island Fiesta Night buffet dinner and has two bars and a coffee shop,
Whether it’s your first dive or your hundredth, Turquoise Bay Dive & Beach Resort sits in an ideal location in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef to make it memorable! This five-star PADI instructor development dive resort offers three dives a day and has accessible reefs suited to divers of all levels.
When you’re not diving, you can visit the spa, paddleboard the day away, swim off the porch of your overwater bungalow, or simply relax and enjoy the resort’s pristine white sand beach and pool.
Rooms are spacious and clean, though not the most modern. The resort is large, spanning 30 acres, but has only 26 rooms giving it a cozy, intimate feeling.
Affordably priced all-inclusive packages are available and start at $169/night per adult double occupancy and include transfers, accommodations, three daily meals and select alcoholic beverages, making it an incredible value.
Dine at Udurau Restaurant where you’ll enjoy dishes that combine the flavors of Latin America, Italy, and the Caribbean and highlight locally sourced fresh island vegetables and fish. Kids and vegetarian menus are available. Sip a sundowner at the Bungalow Bar to end the perfect day in paradise.
CoCo View Resort is a dive photographer’s paradise! Shore dive whenever you desire, air is always available and stellar shore dive sites are but a few fin kicks from the resort. Dive the 140’ Prince Albert wreck, Newman’s Wall, and CoCo View Wall in CoCo View’s “Front Yard”. Or take a short ride in the resort’s dive boats to some of Roatan’s best dive sites.
The resort’s camera room is a dive photographer’s dream come true! You can rent gear, get one-on-one instruction, schedule a custom photo shoot, get prints made, and more! If you’re a real dive photo enthusiast, plan your trip to coincide with one of the week-long underwater photography workshops various weeks throughout the year.
This intimate dive resort has just 29 guest rooms and all are located either at the water’s edge or over the water. The spacious bungalows are air conditioned or you can open the French doors and take advantage of nature’s air conditioning. The bungalows are decorated in traditional Honduran colors, textiles, and wood but you’ll probably spend most of your time lounging outdoors in your hammock.
Meals are served in the Clubhouse and include traditional Honduran fare and feature local ingredients. Nightly entertainment by local dancers and musicians and in-room spa treatments are just some of the other great amenities that keep divers coming back year after year!
The five colorful cottages perched over the water at Mango Creek Lodge give this all-inclusive resort a whimsical vibe. Each cottage can sleep three with one queen and one single bed and features Honduran hardwood floors, mahogany and cedar louvered windows, and, hand-carved decorative doors and furniture. The overwater bungalows are not air conditioned but situated in a way that they have wonderful breezes. On the outside, each cabana has a private deck complete with a chaise lounge, hammock, fresh water shower, and ladder for direct access to the water.
Located in Port Royal Harbor on Roatan’s East End, Mango Creek Lodge sits on 22 acres and is a fisherman’s paradise. Fly and spin casting in the flats and the mangroves offer diverse fishing experiences and bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook are some of what you can expect to catch.
Small group dives with less than eight people allow you to enjoy the pristine reef system and there are 12 dive sites within minutes of the lodge. Refuel from the day at the overwater restaurant and a beverage since the all-inclusive pricing includes beer, wine, and spirits.
